I will be performing in the world premiere of "Marie Curie Learns to Swim".
More from Hartford Opera Theater/Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra:
Join us for an evening of music by Hartford based composer, Jessica Rudman including the world premiere of the one act opera "Marie Curie Learns to Swim," with libretto by Kendra Preston Leonard assisted by dramaturg Sadah Espii Proctor; the monodrama "Trigger"; and the song cycle "Lady Macbeth," on Saturday, April 28 at 7:30pm at the Parish House at the Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford. This evening of new music will be accompanied by members of the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Dan D'Addio. The operas will be directed by Kristy Chambrelli.
Each piece features strong female characters that must overcome adversity, to succeed and even survive. "Marie Curie Learns to Swim" is a telling of Curie's life through conversations between her and her daughter on a beach. As the opera unfolds we see that learning to swim presents a parallel to Curie's struggle to advance as a female scientist in a field dominated by men. "Trigger," is a short monodrama for soprano based on a true event of a police officer being caught on recording asking what an abuse victim did to deserve to be hit. In this riveting piece, Rudman tackles the important issue of domestic violence. "Lady Macbeth" is a song cycle with libretto by Kendra Leonard, scored for mezzo-soprano, clarinet, cello and piano.
